India Ratified Paris Agreement Dated 2 October

As part of the initial commitments made under the agreement, India also plans to reduce its CO2 emission intensity – emissions per unit of GDP – by 33-35% from 2005 levels over 15 years. The goal is to produce 40% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030. The rapid adoption of the agreement and the key role it will play in ratification will allow India to put pressure on developed countries to make more ambitious commitments to reduce CO2 emissions and finance and technology for developing countries to enable a low-carbon economy, in line with the new rules of the Paris Agreement. As of Sunday, 61 countries responsible for 48% of global emissions had ratified the Paris Agreement. With India`s accession, the agreement moved closer to entry into force. It will not enter into force until it has been ratified by at least 55 countries that produce at least 55% of global CO2 emissions. The ambitious Paris Agreement, signed in December 2015, obliges Member States to make binding commitments to reduce carbon DIOXIDE (CO2) emissions to prevent global average temperatures from exceeding 1.5oC compared to pre-industrial years. On November 4, 2019, the United States informed the custodian of its withdrawal from the agreement, which will take effect exactly one year after that date. [30] In order to continue this agreement, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited world leaders of state and government to a special ceremony at the United Nations in New York on 21 September. At the ceremony, the Heads of State and Government were asked to either table their ratification instruments or indicate when they would do so in order to speed up the process of turning the Paris Agreement into law. India will ratify the Paris agreement on climate change at the United Nations, an environment ministry official said. India is responsible for about 4.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions and was the 62nd country to ratify the agreement. About 61 nations responsible for about 53 global emissions have ratified the agreement to date, including India, the United States, China and many island states.

The Paris Agreement applies to international law, thirty days after at least 55% of emissions were deposited by 55 countries filing their ratification instruments with the Secretary-General. Although India has been reluctant to ratify the Paris Climate Agreement in the near future, it ratified the agreement on 2 October 2016. “The world is now talking about ways to stop global warming; to prevent the Earth`s temperature from rising by another two degrees. We were run by Deen Dayal Upadhyay and we know what this could mean for coastal cities and countries… What it could mean for Kerala.
